Gallery Wall Frame Sets: Layout, Sizes & Pack Counts

Plan gallery wall sets using outside dimensions, orientation and gaps. Compare three-, five- and seven-piece references and calculate a set contents list.

Plan a gallery wall set using the outside width and height of each frame, its orientation and the intended gaps. Specify photo openings separately. Then number every component so that the arrangement, quotation and retail contents list describe the same set.

These are selection directions, not pre-approved hanging layouts. The final count, photo openings, mats and included fittings still belong in the agreed specification.

Separate the wall footprint from the photo opening

The wall footprint is the outside boundary occupied by the entire group. A photo opening describes the image area inside one frame. Enlarging a mat or changing the frame profile can change the relationship between them. A list of “8 × 10 photos” is therefore not enough to calculate the complete wall footprint.

Draw a box for each frame using its outer dimensions. Mark portrait or landscape explicitly; rotating a frame exchanges its width and height in the layout. Place the desired spacing between boxes, not between photo openings. Use the frame size guide to label the different measurements.

A worked three-frame layout

Worked layout / three equal frames. Catalogue outer dimensions with illustrative spacing. The diagram is a planning example, not a hanging-hardware specification.

Illustrative layout using catalogue outer dimensions: YC017 lists 8.7 × 10.7 inches. If three frames with those dimensions are placed upright in a horizontal row with an assumed 2-inch gap between each pair, the total width is (3 × 8.7) + (2 × 2) = 30.1 inches. The outside height is 10.7 inches when all three top edges align.

The 2-inch spacing is an example input, not a required or tested installation spacing. The calculation uses outer frame dimensions; it does not verify the photo openings, supplied hanger positions, wall fixings or finished pack contents.

For a mixed group, set a common origin on your drawing. Give each box an x-position, y-position, width and height. The overall width is the furthest right edge minus the furthest left edge; use the corresponding upper and lower edges for overall height. This also handles staggered rows without pretending the group is a regular grid.

Make a numbered contents list

For the five-piece references, the supplied outside-size configuration is one 11.7 × 14.7 inch frame, two 8.7 × 10.7 inch frames and two 5.7 × 7.7 inch frames. Label them A, B1, B2, C1 and C2. Alongside each, record its photo opening, orientation, finish, mat and fittings.

For the seven-piece references, the listed configuration adds two 4.7 × 6.7 inch frames. Give that pair its own component labels. Do not merge identical-looking entries if they require different mat openings, printed inserts or finishes.

Translate sets into component quantities

Arithmetic example: 80 sets with the five-piece configuration require 80 large frames, 160 medium frames and 160 smaller frames: 400 individual frames in total. The order quantity is still 80 complete retail sets. Accessories and packing materials require their own quantities.

Check both totals on the quotation. A price per frame and a price per complete set are not directly comparable. Sets per carton is a third quantity, to be agreed after the retail pack is defined. See the packaging guide for full and partial carton calculations.

Prepare a layout for a sample review

  1. Draw and number the outer frame boxes at one stated scale.
  2. List every photo and mat opening beneath its component number.
  3. Specify the intended wall footprint, gaps and orientations.
  4. Record whether a hanging template, instructions or fittings are requested.
  5. Compare the supplied sample and its actual component list with the drawing.

A layout drawing is not a mounting or load-bearing specification. Wall type, fittings and installation requirements need appropriate confirmation. Nothing in the catalogue establishes universal wall compatibility.

Use the gallery set planning worksheet to prepare the drawing fields, then add references from the gallery wall collection to your enquiry list.

Basis: supplied catalogue fields for YC012–YC018 and YC023–YC025. Layout gaps and order quantities are expressly illustrative; calculations can be reproduced from the inputs shown. This guide does not report an installed or tested Youchuang project.
